Professional Development Sessions & Social Events
To keep you all in the know and to further support your future teaching careers, the ESA has prepared some really helpful PD workshops from various presenters coming from the ATA, Alberta Ed, ECSD, and EPSB. Some workshops will have the added benefit of providing a certificate of completion for your teaching portfolio, which will be distributed electronically.

ESA Board Game Night
Join us for an afternoon of board games at The Hexagon Board Game Café. Whether you're an experienced player or new to board games, this event is a great opportunity to meet new people, enjoy a variety of games, and have a great time.

Come join the Education Students' Association, Alberta Teachers' Association, and local school boards at this event designed to answer your questions.
The Alberta Teachers' Association and local school boards will be at the Room At the Top on Saturday, February 8th from 6:00 - 9:30 pm.
Please use this Google Form as an opportunity to ask your questions to the Alberta Teachers' Association before the event!
The event will include presentations, door-crasher prizes, and lots of time to mingle and ask your questions to industry professionals.

This session from the Early Childhood Education Council of the ATA offers pre-service teachers practical strategies to implement during their practicums, fostering an engaging and inclusive primary classroom environment. Participants will explore routines, songs, and rhymes designed to support effective classroom management. Favorite mentor texts will be introduced alongside activities that encourage reflection, comprehension, and the development of social skills. Pre-service teachers will gain practical literacy strategies focusing on phonics, phonemic awareness, high-frequency word recall, and fostering confident writers. The session will also highlight the importance of math talks, critical thinking, and hands-on manipulatives in building foundational numeracy skills. Additionally, participants will discover cross-curricular projects that incorporate mixed-media art and have the opportunity to create an art piece inspired by Canadian author Barbara Reid.
This session will mainly focus on content and strategies for Kindergarten-Grade 3.

This event, offered by the ESA and the Alberta Teachers' Association, builds and expands upon basic classroom management strategies. In particular, participants will learn how to manage behaviours that disrupt teaching and understand how to keep learning on track.


Meet The Creature
The Education Students' Association (ESA) is hosting a Halloween costume contest at The Pint Whyte on Friday, October 25 from 9:00 - 11:00 pm.
The event will be a play on "Meet the Teacher," night. We encourage students to use their creativity to dress up as a creature in teacher's clothing. The crowd will vote for the three best-dressed creatures; the top three contestants will be awarded a variety of prizes from local businesses.
COSTUMES WILL BE JUDGED (and prizes awarded) AT 9:30! Be sure to arrive before then!
*Tickets are $10 and include one pre-paid drink (house-rules apply, valid before 11 pm). Payments must be made through debit/credit/e-transfer (NO CASH).

Applying for Your BC Teaching Certification Information Session
On Oct. 24 at 3 p.m. PST (6 p.m. EST), Mary Newstand, Manager of Certification Operations at the Teacher Regulation Branch, will present and answer questions about the certification process in BC. Come ready to learn all you need to know about navigating the application portal, documents you'll need to submit, deadlines and more. The Teacher Regulation Branch (TRB) is a division of the Ministry of Education and Childcare.

Pumpkin Painting and Carving with the ESA
Hello Faculty of Education and English Language School students!
You are invited to join the Education Students' Association (ESA) to decorate a pumpkin on Friday, October 18.
Join us from 4-6 pm in the 4th floor lounge of the Education North building. Pumpkins will be delivered and materials will be available for carving and for painting a pumpkin.
Attendees are asked to fill out this google form and pay $5 (per pumpkin) to reserve their pumpkin and decorating supplies; the ESA will cover the rest!
The "best-designed," pumpkin will be awarded a prize from the ESA; we look forward to seeing what you create!

Kick off the MAF Information session season with our first event of the school year! This session will walk you through BC’s official job board for K-12 teaching opportunities. We’ll show you how to build an account, the different employers, and share application tips to get you noticed!

This Professional Development session, co-hosted by the Education Students' Association and the Alberta Teachers' Association, will focus on providing pre-service teachers/education students with the necessary skills and strategies to effectively manage their classroom.

Join us for our FIRST Professional Development event of the 2024/25 academic year! This presentation from the Alberta Teachers Association (ATA) will provide an insightful discussion on how teachers can integrate areas in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math into their instruction in ALL subjects to accomodate the new draft K-6 Curriculum.

Come join a walk through the Edmonton River Valley led by Dr. Dwayne Donald. This is a walk organized for the student, faculty and staff of the College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH is comprised of Law, Education, Business, Arts).
Dr. Donald is a descendant of the amiskwaciwiyiniwak (Beaver Hills people) and works as a professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta. His work focuses on ways in which Indigenous wisdom traditions can expand and enhance our understandings of curriculum and pedagogy. Dr. Donald teaches in the Faculty of Education and holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Reimagining Teacher Education With Indigenous Wisdom Traditions.

In this session Lewis and Jacqui Cardinal will present why foundational Indigenous cultural traditions, such as, ceremonial protocols and ceremonies are important good relations and maintaining balance, and living in harmony with nature and human relations. The session will also provide the opportunity to have a hands-on experience in tying a ’Tobacco Tie’ as a part of ceremony preparing as well as time for good discussion.
Lewis Cardinal is Woodland Cree from the Sucker Creek Cree First Nation in Treaty No. 8 in northern Alberta, Canada. His consulting company, Cardinal Strategic Communications, specializes in Indigenous education, communications, and project development. He is also owner, CEO, and Head Storyteller of Red Earth Blue Sky Productions, a media productions company. Currently, Lewis is Senior Advisor for “kihcihkaw askî–Sacred Land” in the City of Edmonton, the first designated urban Indigenous ceremony grounds in Canada.
Jacquelyn Cardinal, sakāwithiniwak (Woodland Cree) from the Sucker Creek Cree First Nation, bridges Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities through her work at Naheyawin. As co-founder alongside her brother Hunter, she guides organizations across Canada in embracing Indigenous perspectives, weaving traditional wisdom into modern contexts to address contemporary challenges. In her spare time, Jacquelyn is a passionate storyteller and award-winning playwright, crafting new myths such as the acclaimed play "Lake of the Strangers."
