ED WEEK- Early Childhood Education: Practical Foundational Activities

Location:

Education Centre South 229

North Campus

This session from the Early Childhood Education Council of the ATA offers pre-service teachers practical strategies to implement during their practicums, fostering an engaging and inclusive primary classroom environment.  Participants will explore routines, songs, and rhymes designed to support effective classroom management. Favorite mentor texts will be introduced alongside activities that encourage reflection, comprehension, and the development of social skills. Pre-service teachers will gain practical literacy strategies focusing on phonics, phonemic awareness, high-frequency word recall, and fostering confident writers. The session will also highlight the importance of math talks, critical thinking, and hands-on manipulatives in building foundational numeracy skills. Additionally, participants will discover cross-curricular projects that incorporate mixed-media art and have the opportunity to create an art piece inspired by Canadian author Barbara Reid.

This session will mainly focus on content and strategies for Kindergarten-Grade 3.
