Teacher - Reading Remediation (Grades 1 - 8)

What is the opportunity?

As a teacher for the Centre for Literacy, you will provide one-on-one individualized support to students who struggle with reading, comprehension, writing (and/or mathematics, if preferred). Support will be online from the comfort of your home. You will be provided with evidence-based specialized professional development, which is ongoing, expected and free for Centre for Literacy teachers.

What will you do?

  • Prepare individualized lesson plans.

  • Teach students remotely using the Google Suite platform.
    Classes are typically 45-60 minutes. 

  • Report progress regularly.

  • Work with a mentor to develop competencies.

What do you need to succeed?

  • Bachelor of Education (or nearing completion)

  • High commitment to professional development

  • Excellent communication skills and emotional intelligence

  • Digital literacy across a broad range of devices

  • Competency using Google Meet and Google Slides, or equivalent

  • Collaborative spirit

Nice-to-have

  • Training in phonological awareness, UFLI Foundations

  • Experience working with students with learning disabilities

  • Ability to provide instruction in French as well as English

Teachers commit to a minimum of 4-6 hours per week with a consistent schedule for the school year. Teaching hours are done typically after school/early evenings and/or Saturdays and Sundays. The Centre’s busiest hours are 4-8 pm (Mountain Time), Monday to Friday.

Rate of Pay

$23-$28 per hour of teaching. Rate is dependent upon education and experience.

Looking for a knowledgeable and energetic female tutor and babysitter for a 12-year old student who is in grade 7 for in-house tutoring in the Mactaggart area in Riverbend, preferably with availabilities on evenings/weekends. Hours are 2-3 hours a week for tutoring. Rate of pay is negotiable starting at $18/per hour depending on experience working with children and education.

The University of Alberta Museums (UAM) seeks three (3) dynamic and energetic Gallery Attendants to assist with its exhibition, On Becoming: New Acquisitions from the University of Alberta Museums Art Collection and related public programs. The Gallery Attendants will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the University of Alberta Museums Gallery A in the Telus International Centre (11104 87 Ave NW) and work collaboratively with the exhibition team to deliver a successful exhibition.
Salary Range -  $18.57/hr plus vacation pay, stat pay & student premium pay (if U of A student)
Hours -  11-17 hrs / week

The Youth Ministry Coordinator will assist in the development and coordination of the Youth Ministry (ages Junior high to high school) at Riverbend United Church.

The staff of Riverbend United Church works within a cooperative team setting and it is understood that the candidate would be a full participant in this team model. All staff report to the Ministry & Personnel Committee.

Contract Terms

  • 10 months: September to June (can be renewed upon mutual agreement)

  • Honorarium: $400/month (based on $20/hour and an average of 20 hours per month)

  • This is a part-time independent contractor position: there are no benefits, paid holidays or vacation entitlement. Source deductions will not be taken.
