  • Part-time Support Worker Needed | Posted: March 19, 2024

Our family is currently looking for a part-time support worker for our child with special needs. Our daughter is 15 years old and has Rett Syndrome. Her body is complex- she walks but needs support for all personal care as her hand function is limited. She is nonverbal but has proficient nonverbal communication (AAC user and quite expressive). She is many things (but is not limited to): hilarious, fun, caring, smart, a lover of music and concerts, exceptional taste in tv and movies, a dystopian literature enthusiast, and a foodie. Our family is very open and casual. We hope to find someone who is comfortable in our home and sees their position more like an extended family member or mentor.

For now, we require after-school care, PD days  plus occasional respite. In the summer, hours shift to 1/2 days (with the possibility of full days if the opposite shift is on holiday). We have significant funding so increased hours are possible if you are interested.

After School care is routine:
(Hours typically 3/3:30-6pm; 2-3 days per week)

  •  personal care (toileting and snack),

  •  studying for tests, exams, or homework ( currently in high school, grade level curriculum),

  •  possible shuttling to programming (horseriding),

  •  just hanging out (reading, watching tv, shopping...)

Summer care:
(1/2 days (am or pm shift); 4-5 hours; 5 days a week except for our family vacation

  •  personal care (toileting, dressing, eating)

  •  some school review or reading

  •  planned outings; previous summers included art walks, errands, beach day trip, hikes, city activities/festivals, support at camps

The kind of person we are looking for:

  • female (for obvious reasons)

  • social, energetic person who truly believes in inclusion

  • reliable; punctuality is important

  •  no experience with special needs or personal care is required; training will be provided

We live south of the Saville (between Southgate and South Campus LRT stations). A car or license isn't required but a benefit (the girl gets cabin fever!) This is a great opportunity for people who are interested in providing care, want to have hands-on learning with AAC, or would like to gain experience in supporting diverse learners.

Pay: $24/hour; paid monthly.

  • Support Needed for Grade 4 Learner with Pre-school and Post-school Activities | Posted: October 3, 2023

A professional family is seeking support for their Grade 4 learner with pre-school and post-school activities.

Pre-school involves arriving at 7am and dropping our daughter at school at 8:20am (school is 3 minutes from home).  In advance of drop-off lunch should be prepared and boxed up, time checks to ensure that student manages her breakfast and ‘get-ready’ routine smoothly - she is independent.  (Some help may be requested with quick review of agenda, shoes and hair.)

Post-school support varies but includes picking student up from school most days at 3:30pm and Thursdays at 2;15pm.  Three days a week a snack is fixed and then student participates in an online tutored session to support Dyslexic literacy strategies.  The other two days activities and play that promote developing literacy skill and self confidence are suggested.  Homework support (minimal) and or special preparation for projects or presentations (minimal) should be woven into time together.  On evenings where parents are delayed (will know in advance) meal preparation for child (simple assembly) requested.

Actual hours are flexible - for example - you have an early class on Tuesdays and cannot accommodate drop off or on Thursdays it is imperative that you leave our home at 5:30pm.  Let’s talk and land on a mutually agreeable schedule; well in advance so that it is fair to all.

Mandatories:

Open and excited to be shown the Orton-Gillingham method; prepared to have a tutorial in this methodology and reinforce Phoenix exercises.  Female student.  Hypoallergenic dog lover.  Alcohol and/or drugs are not to be consumed in the presence of our daughter or on our property.  No social media post of our daughter, home or related are permitted.

Location:

Home - Northwest Edmonton - Just off 159th Street Whitemud exit.

Paid Position:

$20-$27 per hour - fluctuating to type of activity (learning vs childcare)

Contact: Susan - please text 403-605-1452 if interested in setting up a video chat to explore further.  References/conversation with previous UofA students who have now been placed in EPSB are available for successful candidate.
