Volunteering for the ESA

Volunteer with us!

Why get involved?

Volunteering with the Education Students’ Association (ESA) is a great way to meet fellow students, make new friends, and gent involved with your faculty.

We are currently looking for volunteers to help out during ESA office hours. This role involves greeting students, answering questions, maintaining general office cleanliness, as well as performing services such as handing out membership cards, merchandise puck ups, and locker rentals.

There are also occasional opportunities for volunteers to support our events or join ESA committees.

Interested in volunteering? Please contact Tony, our Volunteer Commissioner, at esavolun@ualberta.ca with the subject line “ESA Volunteer Inquiry Winter 2024”.

Volunteering in the Office

You will be in the office with another volunteer and one to two of ESA’s council members. Before you begin your office hours, you are required to attend an orientation provided by the ESA’s Volunteer Commissioner for the year or another Council member in office. You are also required to volunteer in the office for at least an hour per week. While in the office, you will perform duties not limited to: answering inquiries in person and on the phone, handing out PD certificates to participants, selling our merchandise and handing out membership cards from the ESA and ATA. You are more than welcome to hang out with your peers and study. Not only are academics important, but so are making connections with your peers!

Volunteering for Special Events

Throughout the year, we provide opportunities on and off-campus. On-campus events include ED Week (happening in January), professional development sessions, tabling, fundraising and social events. Normally, we also provide volunteer opportunities from organizations off-campus so that education students can also gain volunteer experience over the summer. Be sure to keep an eye out on these opportunities on eClass, our website, and in your email!

Volunteering for Committees

Regardless of which committee you’re on (and which ESA council member runs that particular committee), you are representing the Faculty of Education as an undergraduate student. Although this is a general description of what being in a committee is, keep an eye out on eClass and in your emails for any openings regarding committees and seats available. To join a committee and find out what’s available, email us esainfo@ualberta.ca

What do you get out of volunteering?

Whether you choose to volunteer in a committee, the office and/or in events held throughout the year, you will get the following:

  • Experience! This is great for your resumé and scholarships! (Please be sure to ask us for a reference letter at least 2 weeks in advance.)

  • A gift from us whether you attend a Volunteer Appreciation Night or not!

  • Some fantastic memories with us! The most important thing in your involvement is to have fun!
