“On each profile throughout the month you may have noticed a bird facing backwards with an egg in its mouth. This bird represents Sankofah - a word in the Twi language meaning “go back and get it.” The bird is sometimes depicted as having one foot facing forward and the other facing backwards which is how I came to know Sankofah while studying in Ghana. The meaning shared with me was that in order to move forward in life you must know where you come from – your culture and your heritage. Sankofah embodies the spirit of Black History Month as we strive to more fully know and honour our past by recognizing and celebrating Black Canadians who have made important contributions to Canada as we move toward a more inclusive and just society.”
